Greyt Kennel Day Out

If you didn’t manage to make it to the Fleet Kennel Open Day on Sunday, 20th May, you missed a marvellous time for hounds and humans!  Do bear the event in mind for next year but in the meantime ….. a little round-up of the thoughts from two of the hounds who attended!!

“Well …. to begin with we, that’s me and Trace, jumped out the back of the car into a car park I’d never seen before.  To be completely honest with you, I was pretty glad to get out of that car – a couple of hours in the back there and – I could do with stretching me legs if ya know what I mean ha ha!

Anyway, we walked down this lane and would you believe it, we were back at that Kennel place.  Well … Trace and me looked at each other and thought “Aye aye, what’s all this about?” But see, we needn’t have worried cos, you’ll never guess what, Marie saw us and gave us both a big pat and then, loads of others hounds just like us turned up.  Course we didn’t need telling, we got right on with it; sniffing, touching noses, I swear I thought my tail was gonna drop off it wagged so much.  Dad bought me a new raincoat and muzzle as well.. corr!

Open Day

Trace and me watched some other hounds walk around the ring.  They were all trying to do their best walking (even though some of them were a bit nervous) hoping that someone would take them home forever.  Hope one of the humans told one of their friends how nice they were?

Anyway, a bit later on, Vic (that my mum’s daughter) takes me into this Bonio & Spoon Race – course I’m excellent at it (probably the slowest race I’ve ever been in)  but she could do with a bit of practice at walking on sand, balancing a biscuit on a spoon.  She got the hang of walking on sand after the first heat and in the final we got third place and best of all – I got a rosette – not that I’m showing- off or anything ha ha!

“That’s enough Paddy – it’s my turn now!!” Well, you can imagine, a dog as good looking as me was bound to attract attention.  Vic entered me for the “Best looking Bitch” Competition which was good fun but even I have to admit, that the girl who won had a slimmer waist and definitely more gloss to her fur!!  Not to worry, I impressed a few humans with my blue Caring Canines bandana and stories of my charity work.  I feel that I was a shining ambassador for the Greyhound breed, which is more than can be said for Paddy who snatched the remains of a chocolate chip muffin out of the bin and tried to eat it.  Mum had to grab it out of his mouth – what an embarrassment!

I would like to thank Caroline and George, the kind ladies from Cedar Vets who gave the humans some good advice on what to look out for if we become ill or suffer a snake bite.  I’m glad about this because silly Paddy almost got an Adder tangled up in his muzzle on the Heath the other day!

After about an hour or two, the humans started to look a bit tired so we all walked back to the car park with Buzz and Adam and their Mum and Dad.  Pad and me snuggled down in the back of the car and zonked out straight away.  Boy, were we sleepy – it’s tiring work socialising you know! As we drove away, I sent a quiet ‘woof’ to the hounds we left behind and hope that they are lucky like us and find a human’s sofa soon in their forever home.

Ps  The humans would like to thank Marie, Jane, Sue, Mo, Sally and everyone for all their hard work in organising the Open Day.
