Jo's Greyhound Blog - Great British Greyhound Walk (Dorset) 24/06/2012

Walk this Way …………  The Great British Greyhound Walk naturally!

What other walk could there be?  You mean you don’t know and you didn’t attend?  Well don’t fret because I’m going to regale you with the facts from the The Great British Greyhound Walk, Poole, Dorset!

Firstly,  this event is organised nationally, to raise awareness of sighthounds as pets and in particular encourage interest and homing of rescue greys.  The numerous walks, across the length and breadth of the country, set off at 10.00 and aim to set a record for the greatest number of Greyhounds being walked simultaneously.  It’s a fabulous thing to be part of and here’s our experience this year.

Great Bristish Greyhound Walk

Our local event this year was held at the beautiful Upton Country Park, Poole.  Location and publicity were looking good, only the weather could gum up the works!  Heavy rain during the night and early morning drizzle appeared to be providing a ‘soggy underfoot’ walk but ……. as we got walking, the clouds drifted apart, the air warmed up and dogs and people tackled the squelchy puddles with good humour!  Greyhounds, Whippets, Salukis, Lurchers, big, small, stripy, plain …. they all walked along nicely and did us proud.  Other walkers were much impressed I think.   Incidentally, we were also joined by Lifeline dog Poppy, who won Best Bitch at the recent Open Day and it was lovely to see her again.

And finally …  I just need to mention that 40 dogs and their owners turned out for the walk and each dog got a Certificate and appeared in a group photo.  Didn’t someone coin the phrase “Flaming June” more like “Flamin, rainin, June today but nothing, I repeat, nothing can dampen down the enthusiasm of Greyhound owners!
