Paul's Greyhound Blog - 3 Greys in 3 Days

Three Greys in three days………………..Oh happy Greys……….. and Grant’s of course.

A busy August Bank Holiday weekend occured when three different dogs were taken out over the course of Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

First up was the lovely Ben the dog we are championing until he finds his forever home. He has been out on a number of occasions with us and Dodger so is very much a known entity to us. He was his usual confident and inquisitive self walking nicely and checking out all the activity around him. On earlier trips out and about Ben has been a little excitable when meeting and greeting both humans and dogs, this time however he was a lot calmer so is learning the correct behaviour.

He is clearly a dog that likes people to fuss over him and people are happy to do just that. He has always been a good dog to take out and seems to fit in with whatever we do with him whether in a town, a park or just at home. When you uncover his playful side he will run, chase and generally interact with you for ages, he just loves your company.

He does not intrude into Dodger’s space in the home, he is happy to find his own space and make himself comfortable. He loves treats, as most dogs do, and is gentle when he takes them from you. He loves traveling in the car and unlike earlier occasions when he would not get into the car he now does so when asked.

All in all Ben is a fun and playful dog with an endearing character and a desire to be involved in whatever you do.

Next up was Blue a new dog to us when out and about and a favorite of a few people at the kennels. What would he be like? Well first of all Blue clearly likes to travel in a car with no problem getting him in or out. Blue walks very nicely on a slack lead with a hint of a cheeky swagger that seemed to say “look at me I’m a stunning chap”. He can also turn on the charm when receiving attention and he certainly got lots of that.

I imagine that being a blue Greyhound means that people see less of that colour than the more common black or brindle colours, this was backed up by the comments from people when they met him.

Blue was a model Greyhound when meeting people showing a calm confident demeanor, enjoying all the fuss and in his case it was very much the more the merrier.

Blue greyhound day out

Blue, our handsome and very loving boy who is still looking for an adoptive home.

He was also very good when meeting other dogs too showing a keen interest in them but remaining remarkably calm all the time. This boy is a real character when he sees something of interest as he is walking along, he does a little dance, like a scaled down version of a prancing horse, it is so cute and it made us laugh.

Blue is extremely cautious of things he doesn’t know or like and can turn into a statue refusing to budge. He really did not like the vinyl floor in our kitchen, it was a case of you put your left foot in your left foot out, your right foot in your right foot out coupled with a worried look on his face. Eventually though, with lots of encouragement, he did walk across it to gain access to the lounge to be with us and Dodger finding himself a space to settle down and relax.

Blue was very well behaved in the house and was very respectful of Dodger, his space and his things. He behaved like the visitor but interacted very nicely with Dodger and us humans getting plenty of love and attention from everyone and he clearly enjoyed it all. He has some quaint touches and the one I especially like is the way he hooks his front leg around your leg as you walk past him to gain your attention.

Blue is a playful chap when motivated. He will chase you up and down the garden, play with cuddly toys and squeaky toys and come to you for treats which he gently takes from your hand.

To sum Blue up he is a fun dog with a happy waggy tail who, like most Greyhounds, absolutely adores attention. He has a face of many expressions and he cannot fail to amuse you with his antics.

Last but not least Ash had a day out with us and like Blue is a new dog to us when away from the kennels. He has lived in a home before so we were interested to see how he would be at home with us. He travelled very well and got in and out of the car without issues. On arrival at home and after introductions in the garden Ash came into the house. Ash was very well mannered towards Dodger, his space and his things, just as Blue was, and settled down in his own space.

He was not bothered by household items or activity around him but him didn’t seem to be quite as relaxed as Blue or Ben were in the house.

When out and about Ash appeared to be a little concerned about the unfamiliar surroundings but did walk nicely on the Canny Collar and lead when given encouragement and with Dodger walking confidently ahead of him.

Ash is also very good when meeting people both adults and children being very gentle with his approaches and more importantly laps up all the attention he gets. He is most certainly a gentle giant of a boy when meeting people.

When meeting other dogs Ash needs more work to make him totally reliable as he appears fine with some dogs but unsure of others. With more introductions and perseverance Ash would become reliable and is no different to most retired racing Greyhounds when mixing with other breeds.

We found that Ash is not one for play he is happiest when lazing around and would happily do that for most of the day.

So what type of Greyhound is Ash? He is certainly the couch potato type. Give him a comfortable place to laze around and he would be very happy to do so. Add the company of humans to the mix and of course food and love and this boy would be a happy bunny.

So three greys in three days how was it for us? Well three very different dogs all a credit to the kennels with their behavior when out and about, allowing us to see significant differences in this wonderful, adorable breed of dog. Each dog will fit into a particular home environment and with good luck and good fortune each will eventually find their forever home. This is why we get such enjoyment from taking Greyhounds for days out away from the kennels and we do this in the hope that we help them find what they truly deserve….. their forever homes.
Good luck boys.
