Just like to say loved reading about the greys . I had three two blacks and a black and white. I have two now spike was extremly nervous and it took months before my work payed off when one morning he was so happy and dancing when i woke , he still got issues around trust of strangers but five years i have had so far of him making me smile, Hazy is like spike big in fact or mine are large. he his very high and keen prey drive so is muzzled when out but greyt lot of love towards people some what people mad for hugs and fuss. the late sonny well he was arthritic and had a bad heart but did well on med till surcumbto cancer .He was exercise limited . So i think they all had special needs in one way. But i would not have it any other way, they except me for me so i except them for them. And you right blacks coats do scrub up well. Hoping in future to find another one that fit us all us him or her

I want to emphasise how great 'special needs' greyhounds can be! I got Minnie at age 2 from Liz Redpath in Liss, she was black, skinny, scarred, depressed, scared of pretty much everything and had only ever lived in kennels. She is now 11 and a totally different girl who is loyal, cheeky and loves her cuddles! She doesn't like strangers near her bed (nor do i!) but otherwise has overcome her many hangups. A year ago we adopted another ex-racer, age 5, from the Blue Cross. He is also black but by contrast he's confident and friendly BUT very keen! We have to be careful and always keep him muzzled in public but he is a fantastic chap and frequently has us giggling at his antics! Never judge a book by it's cover- u could be missing the happy ever after that is SO rewarding!

Hi Amanda

We'll reply by email to you. Given patience there is lots you can achieve with your boy, he'll likely never be confident around strangers, but he will improve if given the right signals and coaching from you. Best regards. Marie

I have a black greyhound who I would think has special needs he stole my heart when he nuzzle my hand for the first time. I am worried though because he is a rescue from the race track. He doesn't,t tolerate my 4 yr old very well. Newman is his name and if I am sick he is right there with me. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I cn socialize him with causing minamal stress when he sees a male he shakes like he is having a seizure. I think he may have had a horrible run in with a male please I am willing to try anything to help time. I have been his owner since June 2011 it is now Jan 2012 please help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lovely article! I have two special needs greyhounds, one toddler, two older children, one Jack Russel and several smaller pets ( sadly not five gold rings or a partridge in our raddled pear tree!). Both my husband and myself work and the greyhounds are, by majority consensus, the least demanding and most rewarding members of the household.
Please consider the 'tricky' ones - after the initial settling period they're often the ones who will really steal your family's heart!

Dear John

Thanks for your comment.

We don't have the facility to do exactly as you ask. There are option though.

One choice is to sponsor Jack through our parent organisation the Retired Greyhound Trust. Jack is in our care and he is an official RGT sponsor dog as well.

Another choice would be for your partner to join us as the kennels any day at 11am. Walking commences daily at that time. It may be possible for your partner to walk their favorite greyhound, but that dog may have already been allocated to another person, or may not be suitable to be walked by your partner. All depends on your partner's strength and experience and whether that is a suitable for the chosen dog. Obviously viewings for any dog must take priority which may also prevent your partner walking a specific dog at any time.

Possiby the best way forward is to come along to the kennels and chat to us.

Regards

Good Morning

My partner is a very keen walker and probably walks a minimum of 5 miles a day. She has been a dog owner in the Past and still loves dogs passionately.
Unfortunately we do not feel ready to house another dog in the near future but she would so much like a dog to walk on a regular basis.
Do you, or can you, run an adoption scheme whereby I could make a yearly donation to the upkeep of one of your dogs thereby allowing my partner to walk it daily?
I hope you have a lovely Christmas and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kindest regards
