Ben’s Outdoor experience 07/05/12.

We arrived at Greyhound Lifeline to take a dog out for the day. It was suggested that Ben would be a good choice as he had been at the Kennels for some time and information about him away from the Kennel environment would be very useful. So Ben it was then and we were armed with the reliable and trustworthy Dodger to help show Ben the way. It wasn’t long before we encountered the first hurdle though and we hadn’t left the car park yet! Ben refused to jump into the back of the car, despite lots of encouragement, so he was lifted in. Dodger then jumped in after him and they both settled down ready for the trip to Farnborough Town Centre.

Ben traveled very well with no sign of distress and preferred to lie down for most of the journey whereas Dodger preferred to stand.

Once at Farnborough, safely parked up, both dogs got out of the car in a controlled fashion. Ben stood and looked around the car park, his ears pricked up, taking in all the activity going on around him. He was very excitable at first pulling quite strongly on the lead and remained very watchful of all the hustle and bustle going on. As time passed by he realised that there was nothing worthy of his excitable behavior and he settled down and became a pleasure to walk on a normal Greyhound collar and lead.

As we waited outside an entrance to Princes Mead people approached and asked about Ben and Dodger. We explained that they were both retired racing Greyhounds and that Dodger was our dog, whilst Ben was enjoying a day out from the Kennels but was looking for a forever home for himself. Ben clearly liked all the fuss and attention but was a little exuberant, especially towards young children, therefore some firm but fair handling was required. However it was not difficult to guide him into the correct responses to the attention he was afforded.

We moved on through the Town to give Ben the chance to see more of the big wide world away from the kennel life that he is so used to and to soak up even more attention that came his way. The more attention he got the more he seemed to like it and with Dodger continuially showing that a calm composure is the best policy alongside Ben his confidence grew noticably.

After an hour in various places in the Town we moved on to, what one might call “the doggie sweet shop and house of fun,” Pets at Home. Lots of interesting/nice smells, doggie treats, dogs being groomed, small fluffies and fish. Ben behaved impeccably and so too did Dodger. Ben did notice a small dog being groomed and gave out an excitable yelp and a whimper but a quick correction was enough to gain the correct response so we forgave him for that minor transgression. Ben and Dodger also met a Veterinary Nurse and the receptionist for the in store Vet who stroked them and commented on how wonderfully placid and strikingly elegant Greyhounds are. Dodger aptly demonstrated how lazy they are as well by crashing out on the floor by the waiting area seats.

Further around the store we went and came across some large marine fish in a tank at Ben’s eye level. Ben became mesmerized by the fish swimming passed his eyes then seemingly disappearing out of sight only to reappear again at the opposite end of the tank.

His face was a picture, (sorry no photo), the look of bewilderment made us laugh. I don’t think he realised that they had gone behind the rocks and plants and swam down to the other end of the tank. Moving further on through the store Ben and Dodger found some dogs to greet giving us further opportunities to introduce them calmly, especially Ben, who as a kennel dog, does not have the number of opportunities to greet different dogs as Dodger has on a day to day basis. Ben showed the potential to be calm provided he was shown the correct behavior and reminded of it from time to time. People were also stopping to admire and fuss over Ben and Dodger and some commented and were sympathetic on Ben’s need for a home of his own, wishing him the best of luck in finding that elusive home. We waited outside the store for a while to give passer’s by more opportunity to see the dogs and Ben’s coat saying “I need a home”.

Back to the car to go home for lunch which meant walking along the pavement beside a busy road and crossing the road. Ben showed no fear of passing traffic and crossed the road calmly. Ben also surprised us by actually jumping into the back of the car and was showing that he was far more settled and enjoying his outing.

On arrival at home both dogs were taken straight into the garden to avoid any potential conflict between the two on Dodger’s territory. Need not of worried though both dogs were happy with each others company, in fact Dodger was ready to play and started urging Ben to chase him. Ben responded but it didn’t last for long, both were tired from all the walking around and they relieved themselves and went indoors for a rest. Dodger went directly to and claimed his bed, remembering that each time Zulu came round he claimed Dodger’s bed. Ben however was content to lie down on the Vinyl floor in the kitchen and watch our lunch being prepared.

Whilst at home our youngest daughter Sarah came in and Ben took an immediate shine to her changing instantly from a chilled out boy into a bouncy playful chap that Sarah clearly liked. She is a big fan of lively playful dogs and it seemed as though Ben could sense that and so produced the required response. They played for a while and Sarah made a big fuss of Ben commenting on what a lovely boy he was. He certainly can be a very playful chap when in the right frame of mind.

With lunch over and all tidied away it’s off out again to a dog friendly pub in Church Crookham for a drink. It seemed that Ben must have had a word in Dodger’s ear as neither Ben or Dodger jumped into the back off the car. That’s not like him! So that’s two dogs to lift into the car then!

The pub was quite busy, lot’s of people and dogs to see. Ben became quite excitable when he came face to face with a young Border Collie who apparently didn’t like dogs wearing coats. Ben also spotted a Spaniel under a chair by the next table to where the Border Collie was and the two of them were enough to start Ben barking and whining. Ben was corrected for this inappropriate behavior and taken to an empty table away from the two dogs. However Ben registered where they were in relation to us and kept a watch in brief on them whilst we had our drinks, occasionally whining and barking to which a firm “No” was enough to correct. Dodger, on the other hand was crashed out on the floor asleep a typical Greyhound indeed.

By the time we left the pub Ben was much more settled than when we arrived and even jumped into the car to go, thankfully so too did Dodger.

A 20 minute stop at Morrison’s in Southwood for people to meet Ben and Dodger and spread the word that Greyhounds make wonderful pets, then back home for a rest and to experience home comforts and treats for being very good boys.

Eventually it was time to go back to the kennels, gosh where did that time go? Ben applied all his charm and gave a look that seemed to say “I would like to stay here please,” but sadly for Ben it was back to the kennels again. I have to say though he did tug at our heartstrings a bit he is a very nice dog underneath that which he currently chooses to show you initially. He will make someone a wonderful pet if he uses those same charms and behaviors on anyone who visits him at the kennels. Go on Ben sell yourself, you can you know, you tried it on us you lovely boy.

“Swap the Gym for a Gemma” ….. “ Don’t just lounge around, adopt a Hound!” ….. “Greys = happy days!” Yeah ….. all right Jo, that’s more than enough but seriously, I think I should be snapped up by the Department of Health in a campaign to encourage people to adopt a Rescue Grey. The reasons are clear; walking a dog can help to boost fitness and health. All that walking and socialising seems to make perfect sense. So where does all the socialising come in then?

About a year ago I joined a Greyhound Walking Group and once a month, Russell and I walk for about 3 miles at a lovely location on the Dorset Coast. The walk follows small tracks over scenic heathland and leads onto a sheltered, sandy beach. It’s great for us, the walkers, having a chat, sharing ideas and enjoying the beautiful surroundings but what’s even better is the way the dogs have such a happy time together. They really love sniffing and snuffling along the pathways, walking and trotting side- by- side and then having a splash in the sea. Naturally they finish with the obligatory, vigorous shake, right next to their owners! There’s barking and dashing about but lots of us to keep a watchful eye. It’s funny though to see the looks on the faces of other dog walkers as they spot not one greyhound or two but about fifteen! In addition, as if that were not enough, the walks raise funds for the rescue and care of the dogs brought into the Charity.

If, on the other hand, you’re not able to take part in regular walking events, there’s the Spring and Summer seasons of Fun Dog Shows and Fund Raisers and of course the highlight of the calendar – The Greyhound Lifeline Open Day Sunday 20th May! The kennels are about 75 miles drive for us but I can’t say enough, how worthwhile it was for us last year. We had such a great day chatting to other owners, entering the competitions and looking through the crafts and items for sale. Everybody is so friendly and of course the dogs all enjoy meeting up.

And finally … I’m sure you’ve all read that stroking a pet helps to reduce your blood pressure and there’s such a long body to stroke on a Greyhound that high blood pressure, doesn’t stand a chance!

We hope to have some Therapy Dog greyhounds attending as well. Perhaps you may be interested in finding out more about what is involved and consequently discover how to use your dog to brighten the lives of the elderly and ill in our community.

Katherine Howie, a senior veterinary nurse at Vets Now , emergency vets will also be manning the information stall for Pet Blood Bank. Naturally she’ll also be happy to answer any general canine health care queries that you may have. Please talk to Katherine to find out how your dog could help save the lives of up to 16 other desperately ill dogs every year.

Entry and parking for Open Day is free of charge, but we would really appreciate donations of canned fish in oil, spring water or tomato sauce (no fish in brine please as salt is poisonous to dogs) or canned dog food.

Tilly is in kennels near Fleet, Hampshire.

She is a small sized, confident and friendly, black female with some white markings. Tilly is still a youngster, having been born only in March 2010. If she is typical of adolescent/young adult greyhounds then she’ll need an active home with someone around most of the day to keep her youthful spirit occupied.

More information to follow as we get to know her better. She is a new arrival as of 12/05/2012.

In spite of the recent weather we are going ahead with our Open Day on Sunday 20th May and it will be held at our kennels after all. We will begin at 11am and finish at 2pm.

We are extremely grateful to St Nicholas’ School, Redfields House, Redfields Lane, Church Crookham, Fleet GU52 0RF who have very generously agreed to letting us use their school car park for the duration of our Open Day. Our previously planed on-site parking is currently an unusable muddy bog due to the recent heavy rains.

Limited parking for disabled persons will be available at the kennels. All other visitors please Park at St Nicholas’ School (address above) and walk the short distance to us. Estimated walk time 10 minutes. It is essential that dog mess is not left on the school site, or indeed our site, so please ensure you have poop bags to hand at all times. Don’t forget of course that you can re-stock with those from us. We sell degradable poop bags in 50′s for just £1 per pack.

We hope you’ll be able to join us and enjoy a fun day out. This event is our biggest fund raiser of the year and it goes a long way toward supporting the payment of our never ending veterinary and feed bills etc.

Entry and parking is free, but we would really appreciate donations of canned fish in oil, spring water or tomato sauce (no fish in brine please as salt is poisonous to dogs) or canned dog food.

New Arrival:

Lulu who was born in December 2008 is our latest arrival. She’s a tiny little girl with a lovely nature and she has passed our cat test with flying colours too.

Another new arrival is expected in on Saturday.

Homed greyhounds:

Bizzle has been homed.

Reserved Greyhounds:

Harry is reserved.

Looking to adopt a greyhound?

Please visit our Greyhounds Needing Homes Gallery to see details of all our available greyhounds.
Donate a scarf to help a greyhound

Ladies everywhere are urged to clear out their wardrobes as the Retired Greyhound Trust is calling for donated ladies scarves of all types for an exclusive charity sale event at the Spirit of Summer Fair at London’s Olympia on 16th – 17th May.

Peter Laurie, the Trust’s Chief Executive, explained:

“The Retired Greyhound Trust is dedicated to finding loving homes for greyhounds when their racing days are over. Last year we found 4,120 homes for ex-racers thanks to the tireless work of our volunteers and the generosity of our supporters. We want to help even more dogs again this year, but we really need your help.

“The Spirit of Summer Fair is a really exciting opportunity for us and we are looking forward to working with The London Ladies Club to raise funds by offering a range of elegant and beautiful scarves for sale, including some unique vintage and collectible designs to suit all styles and budgets.”

One long-standing supporter of the Trust’s work is model, actress and singer Twiggy, who first got involved after helping find homes for brother and sister retired greyhounds Gracie and Joe. During a recent photo shoot for her ‘Twiggy’ clothing line with M&S, she met Monty, a retired greyhound.

Twiggy said:

“This is such a great cause that is very important to me, which is why I have personally donated a scarf. I encourage everyone to dig deep into their wardrobes, and their hearts, and send in any fine scarves they can spare to help the Retired Greyhound Trust raise funds to rehome these gorgeous dogs.”

To help support the Trust and donate a fine scarf, please send it by 14th May to: Scarf Appeal, Retired Greyhound Trust, Park House, 1-4 Park Terrace, Worcester Park KT4 7JZ.

A date for your diaries: On Sunday 20th May between 11am and 2pm we are hosting our Open Day at the kennels.

We’ll have a raffle, tombola, merchandise, plants and hand made cards for sale, home made cakes, jams and pickles, refreshments and a selection of other attractions too. Not forgetting of course a few fun competitions for your greyhounds to take part in. Our wonderful home seeking greyhounds will be out on parade too.

We hope you’ll be able to join us and enjoy a fun day out. This event is our biggest fund raiser of the year and it goes a long way toward supporting the payment of our never ending veterinary and feed bills etc.

Free entry and parking, but we would really appreciate donations of canned fish in oil, spring water or tomato sauce (no fish in brine please as salt is poisonous to dogs) or canned dog food.

Getting ready for the Homeless Hound Parade 2011

Please can we ask people not to bring dog treats for this event as we are still working our way through the veritable mountain of them collected during our Christmas appeal! Your generosity then absolutely astounded us and we are still grateful, but this time tinned fish and dog food would be much more useful and they greyhounds do love their sardines, tuna and pilchards!

New Arrival:

Lulu who was born in December 2008 is our latest arrival. She’s a tiny little girl with a lovely nature and she has passed our cat test with flying colours too.

Homed greyhounds:

Jack, Turbo, Alfie and Imi have been homed.

Reserved Greyhounds:

Bizzle is reserved.

Looking to adopt a greyhound?

Please visit our Greyhounds Needing Homes Gallery to see details of all our available greyhounds. (Please note that there are 3 pages to this gallery, so if you don’t find your perfect greyhound for you on page 1, please keep looking as he/she may be on page 2 or 3).

New Greyhound Blog:

Jo has the latest entry in our Greyhound Blogs. Her Tracy the greyhound applies to become a therapy dog. Find out if she succeeds?

We Still Need Foster Homes – Can you help?

If you think you might be able to foster a greyhound then please read our Greyhound Fostering Information page.

Cat Test Passes:

Lulu, Abbie, Champ and Harry have all passed cat tests and with caution in the early days they would be able to learn to live safely with cats.

Foster Dog Updates:

Tara has turned into a real lady in a home environment. She’s living in a busy home with other dogs/bitches (including a small terrier). Clean, quiet, able to be left and sociable with children and other dogs. Why she is still waiting for her home, we don’t actually know.

Abbie remains the perfect foster dog. We don’t understand why this gentle and perfectly behaved girl has not been snapped up already. Abbie has passed our cat test.

Dan has recently moved into foster care and he too has turned into a smashing pet. Please give Dan a chance and ask to meet him. He’s one of those dogs who is a bit reticent until he knows you, but the lad has oodles of love and loyalty to give. Think what you could discover about him if you were to give him a chance to know you. Just look at Dan below, what a relaxed boy he is.

Sponsored Slim:

Fiona Selby is aiming to lose 2 stone in weight and has offered to raise sponsorship for Greyhound Lifeline through her efforts. Her local Weigh Watchers group in Northamptonshire will verify whether or not she succeeds and/or how much she manages to lose.

If you’d like to offer Fiona some incentive to succeed and help raise funds for us at the same time then please email us at enquiries@greyhoundlifeline.co.uk giving your name and address (including postcode) and details of how much you wish to sponsor either in total and we’ll fill in the form for you.

Those of you who pay UK tax please let us know whether you agree or not to us claiming Gift Aid on on your sponsorship to increase the amount we receive at no additional cost to you.

New Greyhound Merchandise lines:

Luxury thick tartan, hooded fleeces are now stocked and available at £22 each and fancy house collars are another recent addition to our merchandise. Wide collars are available at £13 each and the standard width house collars are just £6 each. Please check out our Greyhound Merchandise Page to see other items we stock.
Lulu is in kennels near Fleet, Hampshire and she is now reserved.

She is an small sized black and white, spayed bitch who was born in December 2008.

Lulu is affectionate and gentle, she can walk on laminate flooring without difficulty. Un-tested with stairs currently.

She travels well but needs persuasion currently to get into a car for her outings.

Lulu has passed our cat test. With caution and vigilance in the early days of adoption we feel that she would be able to learn to live safely with cats.

A new arrival as of 25/04/2012 and more information about her will appear as we get to know her better.

This week we said a fond farewell to our long stay boy Jack who has finally found himself a lovely home after looking since 2008. Since joining us Jack has been “through the mill”. He developed auto immune disease and for a while he did suffer extremely painful toes and was barely able to walk due to his body rejecting his toe nails periodically.

Jack came through this trauma well though and working with our vet the right combination of drugs and supplements was found. Nowadays it is quite rare for Jack to suffer any discomfort from this disease. Jessica and Andy who have adopted him were un-phased by his condition, they simply fell in love with Jack. Thanks to both of them for giving such a deserving, special needs greyhound a home for life.

Jack was, whilst with us, an official RGT sponsor dog. He helped raise funds to support his fellow greyhounds Nationwide and he even received postal Christmas cards from some of his sponsors and fans. Head Office have been notified of the good news and they’ll be in touch with his sponsors in due course when we hope they will be able to continue sponsoring a different needy greyhound.

Jack likes to swim

We all wish Jack a long, happy and healthy life and we look forward to him visiting us in May when we understand he’ll be coming along to our Open Day. Bless you Jack, you are already missed, but it’s tears of joy we shed now rather than those of concern that you looked like being a lifetime kennel dog.

New Arrival:

Lulu who was born in December 2008 is our latest arrival.

Homed greyhounds:

Jack, Turbo, Alfie and Imi have been homed.

Reserved Greyhounds:

Bizzle is reserved.

Updated Descriptions:

Dan, Phoebe, Ash and Cody have updated descriptions available.

New Greyhound Blog:

Jo has a new Greyhound Blog on site for your enjoyment. Tracy the greyhound applies to become a therapy dog. Does she succeed?

We Still Need Foster Homes – Can you help?

If you think you might be able to foster a greyhound then please read our Greyhound Fostering Information page.

Cat Test Passes:

Abbie, Champ, Alfie, Phoebe and Harry have all passed cat tests and with caution in the early days they would be able to learn to live safely with cats. Phoebe is actually cat safe rather than a simple cat test pass.

Phoebe is doing well in her foster home and she is cat safe (a term we very rarely use) and able to be left with canine company. If a crate is used she is able to be left entirely on her own for reasonable periods without problems. A very loving girl just waiting for a home where she can get plenty of all breed socialising and exercise every day.

New Greyhound Merchandise line:

We now stock some lovely, patterned house collars. The wide ones sell at £13 each and the narrow ones at £6 each. We hope to have some sample photos on site for you shortly.

Annual Kennel Open Day

Our Open day is coming soon. Please make a note in your diaries and come along and join us. Sunday 20th May is the date, 11am until 2pm is the time. We hope to see you there.

Entry and parking will be free, although a donation of canned dog food or fish (tuna, sardines, pilchards etc) in oil, spring water or tomato sauce would be most welcome. Absolutely no fish in brine though please as salt is poisonous to dogs!

More information about events and stalls will be published nearer the day.

Fundraise for us using eBay

You can now sell items on ebay and choose to donate between 10% and 100% of your sale price to Greyhound Lifeline. If you are an ebay member you could also simply donate by using your Paypal account. For ebay members only please visit their Sell for Charity page and enter “Greyhound Lifeline” in the Charity name area.

If you are a UK tax payer please also tick the Gift Aid box. Please read ebay’s terms and conditions carefully as we cannot be held responsible for any problems you may encounter. Could you sell your unwanted items and help us to buy food, provide veterinary care and generally look after the greyhounds in our care at the same time?

Phoebe is doing well in her foster home and she is cat safe (a term we very rarely use) and able to be left with canine company. If a crate is used she is able to be left entirely on her own for reasonable periods without problems. A very loving girl just waiting for a home where she can get plenty of all breed socialising and exercise every day.

Sponsored Walk:

The Isle of Wight Branch of the RGT are holding their annual sponsored walk to raise funds for the RGT on Sunday 22nd April along the Southsea sea front. The walk begins at 2pm from the Eastney Swimming pool and the distance is approximately 6 miles. Representatives from Greyhound Lifeline are very welcome to join in (and having gone before it is a lovely day out with lots of greyhounds and owners in attendance).

To obtain a sponsor form and/or further information please call Sue from the Isle of Wight RGT on 01983 300332 or 07933 785696 or call Bill on 02392 786132. Any well behaved dog of any breed is welcome to take part.
