What an amazing month! It’s been busy, busy, busy on the homing enquiry front which is wonderful news for the greyhounds in our care. For our staff it’s a case of struggling to keep up with the changing residents, remembering new names and getting to know the personalities of our new arrivals whilst saying goodbye to those lucky greyhounds that are heading off to start their new lives.

Long may the busy spell last, but we are realisitic enough to know that things will no doubt calm down again soon enough.

We have had further poems submitted by Tracy Errington and they will appear on site for you enjoyment in the near future. We also have another new blog author on board and her submission too will appear soon for you to read.

Champ, Bizzle and Star met our “stooge dogs” (A Westie, a Staffy and a Labrador) for the first time today and all three did very well. Description updates for these three boys to follow as soon as possible. Susie missed meeting the stooge dogs today as she was at the vets being spayed with Rose. Both girls however are recovering nicely and Susie will have her chance at other breed socialisation next week while the boys go to the vet for their turn to be neutered.

Homed Greyhounds:

Bianca (now Ruby), Parker, Radnor, Rocket (now Bryn), Holly, Pippa and Jeeves (now Badger) have so far gone home in February.

Radnor and King supporting "Neighbourhood Watch".

Reserved Greyhounds:

Elsie, Rose and Ivy are reserved.

Updated Greyhound Descriptions:

Ben, Jake, Zulu, Rosie, Rose and Phoebe have updated details on site. We hope to have a photograph of Phoebe shortly.

New Greyhound Arrivals:

Henry joins us tomorrow and he is going staright into foster care being an older lad of almost 9 years. Star, Bizzle, Susie and Champ are the most recent arrivals in. Two further new arrivals are awaited. Details of all our available greyhounds can be found in our Greyhound Adoption Gallery.

Greyhound Foster Dog Updates:

Ernest (known as Ollie to his foster carer) is settling in to home life steadily. He is no longer a lad suffering from kennel stress at least and he’s rapidly discovering the pleasure of life outside of kennels. A very social boy, he’s proving a lovely lad to take out on a walk. He’s also passed our cat test!

Abbie continues to thrive in her foster home. She has proved herself to be a very affectionate girl with those she knows. A real lady of a greyhound with no vices, who is very ready for an adoptive home of her own. Another cat test pass greyhound.

Abbie in her foster home

Phoebe has settled well into her foster home. She is progressing nicely in all respects including recall with the help our behaviourists who live nearby.

Jack has moved on and into a multi dog household (also under the supervision of our behaviourists) where he is learning better all breed social skills. More updates on Jack’s progress in due course.

Tara Greyhound

This lovely lady, our Tara has been with us far too long. For no particular reason Tara has been overlooked time and time again. Please consider Tara for adoption. She’d particularly like a nice active home with lots going on. She likes to play, run around and she loves a cuddle too. Nine months waiting for her family and still they have not found her. Will you choose Tara as your pet? For more information about Tara please see her full description in our Greyhound Adoption Gallery.

Could You be a Greyhound Blog Author?

New site content is needed in the form of our Greyhound Blogs. Lady’s blog is active and Sue’s has a new entry. Our archive blogs are still able to be seen, but some new content from existing authors or some new authors altogether would be very welcome.

New Greyhound Blog Entries

Jo is a new Greyhound Blog Author. We’d like to thank her for sharing her life with greyhounds with us. Jo’s Introductory Greyhound Blog is now on site and we look forward to reading more about her two adopted greyhounds’ antics in due course.

Lady’s Greyhound Blog Part 10, part 11 and part 12 are on site and ready to read.

Sue has a recent greyhound blog entry for your enjoyment too.

Annual Kennel Open Day

We have set the date for our 2012 Kennel Open Day. It’s going to be on Sunday May 20th from 11am through to 2pm. We’ll have lots of stalls and fun events, plus a parade of our “stars of the show”, those greyhounds still waiting for adoption.

Entry and parking will be free, although a donation of canned dog food or fish (tuna, sardines, pilchards etc) in oil, spring water or tomato sauce would be most welcome. Absolutely no fish in brine though please as salt is poisonous to dogs!

More information about events and stalls will be published nearer the day.

Marie’s son Ed is running in the Fleet half Marathon on Sunday 25th March 2012 to raise funds for Greyhound Lifeline.

Sponsored Event

Marie’s son Ed is running in the Fleet half Marathon on Sunday 25th March 2012 to raise funds for Greyhound Lifeline. A sponsor form will be available at the kennels from Tuesday 28th January. If you would sponsor Ed’s effort we would be most grateful. Don’t forget if you are a UK Tax payer to tick the Gift Aid box. It’s mean extra money for the Charity at no extra cost to you.

Pet Blood Bank

Our next session for blood donation has been scheduled for Sunday March 4th. Please register your dog with Pet Blood Bank for this session by contacting them on 01509 232222. Criteria for donation along with a full explanation about what to expect can be found on our Pet Blood Bank Information page.

Greyhound Lifeline Newsletter:

Our newsletter is finally being drafted, it won’t be too long now before we can issue it to those of you on our mailing list. If If you’d like to receive our newsletter then please join the Greyhound Lifeline Newsletter.
Fundraise for us using eBay

You can now sell items on ebay and choose to donate between 10% and 100% of your sale price to Greyhound Lifeline. If you are an ebay member you could also simply donate by using your Paypal account. For ebay members only please visit their Sell for Charity page and enter “Greyhound Lifeline” in the Charity name area.

If you are a UK tax payer please also tick the Gift Aid box. Please read ebay’s terms and conditions carefully as we cannot be held responsible for any problems you may encounter. Could you sell your unwanted items and help us to buy food, provide veterinary care and generally look after the greyhounds in our care at the same time?

I would never have imagined two years ago that every coat I own would have the pockets stuffed with poo bags and that my attempts to look stylish arriving at work, would be hopelessly undone by tell-tale handles sticking out!

That, of course, is what has happens and seems naturally to lead to a person asking. “What dog have you got?” then the charm-offensive of owning a rescue greyhound begins.

Let me straight away introduce myself, my name is Jo and I am the owner of two rescue greys. Tracy is 7, mainly white with black patches and she is a tall girl. Paddy is 4, mostly black and he is an athletic, muscle-bound lad. Tracy is very much a ‘snooze in a deckchair’ type whilst Paddy is more ‘somebody turn on the treadmill!’

Paddy is a work in progress and it’s only dawned on me recently how far he has come in the twelve months he has been with us. In the early weeks, he was on ‘red alert’ every time he went out. I’m sure he’s scaled this down now to ‘amber alert’ most of the time.

He still keeps a very close eye on cats that have the audacity to stare at him, squirrels that have the cheek to run up tree trunks or plastic carrier bags that skulk in the long grass. He is looking back at me on a walk much more now and is responding nicely to a treat. Feisty little dogs that come right up to his nose … well we’re working on that so more of that next time.

Truth be told, whatever greyhound you take home, you’re going to have to put some work in and it might seem tricky to begin with, but it really does get easier. It doesn’t take long for them to feel at home and the benefits for the whole family are impossible to measure. Forcing you up out that comfy leather chair to go for a walk – great exercise and a chat with the dog owner up the lane – is a fantastic remedy for stress!

That is the amazing thing about owning a greyhound; all kinds of folk from children and older ladies to young ‘lads-about-town’ have a genuine feeling for them and think they’re great – and they are!

What a busy start to the week it has been and it’s only Tuesday!

Monday saw two greyhounds head off to homes of their own and today saw our new girl Rose get reserved and Radnor formalise his adoption as well.

Zulu had a day out today to gain a little experience with unfamiliar breeds and new people as well. Sky too went off for a socialisation walk on unfamiliar territory.

All our kennel residents had their regular socialisation and play session with other breeds of dog this morning and Jake, Rosie and Ben particularly made wonderful progress. Revised descriptions for them and of course details of all our greyhounds can be found in our Greyhounds Needing Homes Gallery.

Homed Greyhounds:

Radnor, Rocket (now Bryn), Holly, Pippa and Jeeves (now Badger) have so far gone home in February.

Reserved Greyhounds:

Rose, Holly, Parker and Ivy are reserved.

Updated Greyhound Descriptions:

Ben, Jake, Zulu, Rosie, Rose and Phoebe have updated details on site. We hope to have photographs of Phoebe and Rose shortly.

New Greyhound Arrivals:

We are expecting 3 new arrivals imminently, more details about the new boys will follow once they are with us.

Greyhound Foster Dog Updates:

Jack, our long stay kennel resident (of 3 years and 7 months) has settled into his long term foster home very well. He’s still looking for that elusive adoption though, so please consider him.

Ernest will be off soon to his new foster home. We hope that he’ll find home living far less stressful than kennel life which has not suited him at all.

Abbie continues to thrive in her foster home. She has proved herself to be a very affectionate girl with those she knows. A real lady of a greyhound with no vices, who is very ready for an adoptive home of her own.

For a bit of fun I jumped onto John to wake him up and washed his face. Last night I had a new experience, I watched the misses take a bath, the water tasted funny and there wasn’t quite enough space in the bathroom for me to jump in, I’ll have to work on that one!

Tuesday 8th

I had a real good chase around with a Weimaraner on our second walk, its owner was very pleased that I gave her dog some exercise.

We went for a pub lunch, my space was worse than the trap, I had to be backed into it before I could/would lie down.

Afterwards we went to Lepe Beach, the tide was in, and high, and lapping against the sea wall, we walked along the top so that I could see and hear all that water. Of course it was brilliant sunshine today. One dogless couple and one dog owner admired me and were interested in my history. He, y’know, John, always plugs Greyhound Lifeline and Greyhound Rescue. He did get your Advert put up by the Vet and one in the Pet Shop.

Wednesday 9th

I have fun at bedtime, some nights I take over John’s bed and won’t let him get into it, sometimes I growl at him, I try staring at him as a threat, but he always shoves me over, I make it really difficult for him, when we’ve had a cuddle I move a bit – for my comfort not his! Huh! He’s got to learn; sometimes he’s a bit slow.

Saturday 12th

They were invited out for a pub lunch as part of their Christmas Present from Shirley and family. It was sooo noisy it took me a while to settle down properly. I was the first time their grandson Robert had seen me. They all love me. Now son in-law, Trevor, has decided that in the future, when they don’t have a Doberman, instead of a Pug, he will have a Greyhound! A chap came over from the bar to learn all about me, he said he had rescued a German Shepherd and a Staffy, – of course John plugged Greyhound Rescue again.

Joan said come the summer I’ve got to learn NOT to walk on HER garden just as the others had learnt! What does that mean? I haven’t a clue, I just wee on the snowdrops!

I have my times when I WANT petting and I let them know for just how long too! I can see out of the windows back and front. John is impressed because I don’t stick my nose onto the glass, he said Molly used to do that and keep smearing the glass, the same applies in the car.

Lots of Love

Lady

Sunday 6th February 2011

Week 9.

Dear Greyhound Lifeline

Monday 31st

I helped myself to Joan’s embroidery wool, I shredded the plastic bag but only managed to pull some of the wool before she took it off me, I don’t pull it to pieces so what’s the issue here?

Forgot to tell you I wiped out a wine glass, then when their daughter, Shirley, came I had a good taste of her G&T. I like apples and oranges and sprouts, but not raw carrots like another dog I meet.

Tuesday 1st

I met Daisy, a white dog covered in black spots, she tried to mount me yesterday, I told her where to get off, today I told her to begin with – no messing about with me. So we just had a nose to nose chat. John gave HER one of MY titbits, OK I got one too but they are MINE!

What a terrible day, we went for a pub lunch, well they did, I was stuck in a narrow space between a seat and a wall, not able to turn round, they moved the table so that I could sort myself out. And then, after a hospital visit, on the way home I slipped off my hammock and sat down in the footwell and was stuck between the front and back seat. John stopped the car, Joan got out and her seat had to be slid forward to release me. It wasn’t elegant or nice you know! Then, I had to get back in so that we could go home. I had a wee first!

There’s not a lot to report for the rest of this week, I’m in a routine now, I still get a bit nervous sometimes when I’m not sure what is going on but I’m getting used to most things now. I still don’t like the vacuum cleaner and certain sounds on the TV. My favourite place is on my bed by the radiator in our lounge.

Lots of Love

Lady
