Izzy's Greyhound Blog :: One Year On (09/10/2009)

Hello everyone it’s me again “Izzy". Mum’s getting over the flu (swine or otherwise), so I thought, while she’s resting I would lie beside her and think of all the things we have been doing since last time I wrote! Strangely enough it’s a year ago today since I first came to this house, just for the day, to see if they would like me!

Follow up:

They sure did!

Well where was I? Oh I know; remember last time I wrote I told you that I kept hearing the word “holiday". I didn’t know what it was… I do now. It means Mum packs loads of “stuff” in big green bags, then one morning they get up really early and dissapear! I don’t know where they went, but a very nice man came to stay in our house to look after me. I thought it was strange when he kept coming out on walks with us - I suppose it was so that I wasn’t afraid when he came to stay. Anyway we got on ok and had a good time together, (he even let me sleep on the bed!) so I must have been a good girl. It was funny because when Mum came back I wasn’t sure what was going on and ran to Spike at first, but it didn’t take long to realise it was Mum and Dad come home. She was very, very happy to see me, and I was quite pleased as well!

Things went back to normal after that and for a little while we slipped into the old routine, then out came the big green bag again! Oh no I thought, they are going away again. Sure enough things kept going in the bag, the “holiday” word was used again, and I just waited.

Then one morning we got up and it was still dark, oh dear I thought, this is not right. Mum took me for a walk, but when we got home again she put ME in the car. What’s going on? where are we going? Oh lovely, I like going in the car. Well off we went, whoopee no cats! huh!!! wrong! we drove a long time and when we stopped we were at cousin Bella’s (remember we went there last christmas) and she lives with two cats as well!

Anyway she has got quite big now and she’s still very “busy” she likes to make sure everyone is alright, but thats ok because we went straight to the park and were soon running about all over the place, then we went back to her home and all got back in the car again!
This time we went out and got on a boat! What’s that all about, not sure I was too keen on that, but we had a great time running about in the biggest park I have ever seen.

The next day it was raining and we went to the beach, I had the best time ever, as soon as my feet were on the sand I just ran and ran, round and round in circles and spinning till I almost fell over, if this is what “holidays” are then can we go every day? Mum took me in the sea, mmm not sure what I think of that, I’m a runner not a swimmer!

Anyhow we stayed for a week and had a great time, when we came home mum started working in the garden.

Well I’m a greyhound as you know, so, I’m not big on gardening but I do like digging! I didn’t know that until mum showed me how (I don’t think she meant to). She was working away, and I was sunning myself and keeping an eye on her, just to make sure she was doing a good job, when she started digging a big hole. What is she doing I thought? dig, dig, dig, she went, then she started moving the dirt to another part of the garden, this was becoming very interesting, she was putting the dirt on what she calls her “flower bed” I’m not allowed on there which is a shame because there are all sorts of interesting things to poke around in (I know because I’ve been in when she’s not looking). Well, she finnished digging and tidying up and put her tools away, I wandered over and had a look in the hole, not very interesting it has to be said, but humans are funny and she seemed pleased with it.

Next day mum went to work as usual. When she came home she had all sorts of stuff that she got out of the car, now what’s happening I thought? While she was changing I had a good poke around with my nose in all the bags.

Oh wow!.. whats that?.. sand , sand,… I love sand, she came back out to the garden and cut open a bag and started pouring it in the hole, oh I was so excited!!!!!!!.. I jumped right in and started digging,I was wagging my tail so hard it was hard to stand up! I jumped out of the hole and ran round and round the garden, the cats were looking at me as if I had gone mad! “didn’t they know that it was sand". I barked and barked to tell them, but the silly things just sat there, mum was laughing and laughing, she could see how happy I was.

I went back to digging in the hole while she tried to put all the rest of the sand in then said I had to stop “helping” her, she was still laughing, but she wanted to “rake” it flat, I didn’t know what she meant so I stopped and watched while she covered up all my loverly sand with pebbles, WHY?

Then she started planting things in her flower bed, I lay down and watched, I was tired from all the running and digging and a bit disapointed that she had covered up all my sand. After a while she went indoors and as it was starting to get dark I thought I would have a good snoop around to see what she had done, I slipped into the flower bed and .. ooh whats this? not sand, but its all soft, nearly as good, I had a little dig, oh not bad, I dug a bit more oops! whats this? must be a plant oh well! I’ll just take it and hide it,… back to the flower bed! oh another one! better hide this one as well, I tossed it onto the grass.
Now I had a big clear patch of dirt to dig in, oh it was great all soft, and it was going everywhere in a big spray behind me, this was fun I thought almost better than sand, I dug some more plants and tossed them round the garden then I began to realise that mum’s “flower bed” was now all over the lawn, I lay down on some clean grass and as it was really quite dark I thought I’ll have a little sleep.
“IZZY ” ” IZZY” oh my word I’ve been asleep. Mum’s calling me, oh she’s coming out in the garden,…oh look at all this mess.. who did that? quick I better go in before she comes out, I ran up the garden wagging my tail and making the little “snorking” noises she likes so much, “she’ll be fine I thought she loves me", and anyway “it’s quite dark now maybe she won’t see what I’ve done"…. “Hello darling” she said “….what have you been doing?” … “Brian!” she shouted “Come and see what this dog has done!” This dog, this dog … how insulting - I’m not a dog! I’m a fine tuned racing hound! Dog indeed……. “No wonder shes’s been so quiet” Mum said, “My plants are all over the lawn"…… and then just when I thought I was going to get the look! (you know the one she gave me when I made a bed with her ironing) she just said “Oh Izzy you really are a real dog now!” and then she was laughing again. “Well young lady” she said “Looks like i’ll be clearing this up tomorrow. Come on” she said “lets go to bed". Oooh yes please mum I have a lovely new bed, but I’ll tell you about that until next time!
Night night everybody, take care
Lots of love from “IZZY”
