Happy New Year!

As midnight strikes on 31st December we’ll say goodbye to 2013 and welcome in 2014. Here’s wishing all of you a very happy and healthy 2014.

2013 has been another challenging year for Greyhound Lifeline in many respects, but we are still here and still working hard to find further homes for retired greyhounds. We’ve been supported, as ever, by our team of dedicated “all weather” volunteer kennel staff and dog walkers, our tireless fundraisers and a multitude of other people too.

There are so many things, sometimes quite small, which people do and that perhaps many people will not realise even need doing, but all those things add up to make a big difference to us and the dogs in our care.

As examples of the variety of ways that people help us we have ladies who make, repair and/or wash the dog coats, we have people and sometimes business’ as well who donate food, treats or even bake their own treats for our dogs to enjoy.

The Pets at Home VIP loyalty card scheme has been a big help to us as quarterly we receive gift cards of varying values to spend in Pets at Home to help our dogs. We have received several hundred pounds worth of goods just this year through that scheme alone!

We have people who take kennel rubbish to the local tip, or who take home sacks of recyclables for disposal, there are people who collect up bedding and towels etc for us to use as bedding, there are people who offer greyhound transport for vet trips, those who give of their time and fuel for home checking. There are our handy men (and women) who help maintain the kennel buildings, fences, gates, drains etc.

Hindhead Walk GBGW 2013

We hosted one of the Great British Greyhound Walk’s at The Devils Punchbowl, Hindhead during 2013.

We also have our wonderful foster carers who do an amazing job. There are jam and cake makers, people who assist with promoting greyhounds as pets by doing meet and greets, attending events or even the simplest things like displaying a poster in suitable places.

Children have collected up coppers and brought in a pound or two as their collection grows, there are creative folk who make amazingly good quality tassels, bandanas and even hand made coats for dogs, hats for people and all sorts of saleable/wearable items. Some people simply make a donation through the web site, in person or by post.

Polo on the sofa

One day we hope to see all our kennel residents and foster dogs as chilled out as Polo here and in a home of their own.

Every way in which people help, whether big or small is appreciated. We are privileged indeed to have so many people who offer support in so many varied ways.

On behalf of the greyhounds in our care we thank all of you who have helped or supported us to continue with our work and care for these most deserving dogs, the greyhounds in our care.

New arrivals:

Lance, Nelson, Nimrod, Eliza and Banksy are our most recent arrivals. Their details along with photographs are now on site along with information about all our other available dogs. To find available dogs please visit our Greyhounds For Adoption Gallery.

Eliza black female
New girl Eliza is an interesting combination of timidness combined with a keen chase instinct. She’d be best with a companion canine and an experienced owner.

Homed Greyhounds:

Lila, Curly, Sonny and Sparky have all found adoptive homes during December.

Greyhounds in foster care:

Bobby (3 legs), Niki and Jet are in foster care along with new lad Banksy, although Banksy is in short term foster for post-operative care and he will return to kennels once our vet is happy he is past the point of complications occurring. If one of our foster dogs interests you as a potential new family member then you simply need to call us and we’ll arrange a mutually convenient date and time for you to meet him/her.

Bobby (3 legs) still needs a home of his own.

Foster Home Appeal:

We need more foster homes. Ideally we are looking for foster homes within easy traveling distance of Fleet, Wokingham, Alton or Southampton as we have trusted volunteer team members in those areas who would be able to assist with viewings if a trip to the kennels was not possible.

Jet in his foster home
Jet is in foster care and now the poor boy has the dubious title of being our current longest stay greyhound. The boy is fun and full of character would you consider giving him a permanent adoptive? home

We prefer foster carers who have some experience of dog ownership and training. Homes without cats and young children are especially sought because homes with young children and/or cats or inexperience dog handlers severely restrict our options of the greyhounds we could place with you.

If greyhound fostering is of interest to you, then please visit our fostering information page to see if it could be the route for you.

Lungworm can kill!

Please be aware of Lungworm, it’s a killer that many of you won’t necessarily have heard of. It is spreading fast in the UK and many dogs have already died from it. Don’t panic however as Lungworm is very easy to prevent and equally if diagnosed early it can be treated very successfully too. Late diagnosis of Lungworm does not always have a happy ending however.

The following link will take you to a Lungworm Information site. For preventative treatment of lungworm you will need to contact your vet. Treatment/prevention of  Lungworm is by prescription medication only.

Fundraise for us using eBay

You can now sell items on ebay and choose to donate between 10% and 100% of your sale price to Greyhound Lifeline. If you are an ebay member you could also simply donate by using your Paypal account. For ebay members only please visit their Sell for Charity page and enter “Greyhound Lifeline” in the Charity name area.

If you are a UK tax payer please also tick the Gift Aid box. Please read ebay’s terms and conditions carefully as we cannot be held responsible for any problems you may encounter. Could you sell your unwanted items and help us to buy food, provide veterinary care and generally look after the greyhounds in our care at the same time?
