Lifeline's Greyhound Updates

What a strange few weeks it has been. As a team we’ve struggled to cope logistically as well as emotionally with what feels like a massive influx of returned dogs, yet whilst it is upsetting that some adoptions don’t work out we are very glad to be here for those dogs that do become displaced. Our job isn’t just to home greyhounds, our job comes with a lifetime responsibility for their welfare in the event things do not work out as hoped.

Recently returned greyhounds include Tilly, Georgie and Jonnie. Before long Lady (not the one pictured below) and Star too will be back with us and in foster homes of their own.

Whilst failed adoptions do inevitably distress the adoptive families, the dogs and our team we have been heartened by the massive support that has come our way.

Cody greyhound

Cody came to us from a home, he was given a 2nd chance and now he couldn’t be happier. He lives with new “Dad ” James and with an adoptive little brother of the Jack Russell Terrier variety. Happy endings do happen.

We would therefore like to pass on a heart felt thank you to all of you who have offered verbal, written and/or financial support to us. It really has help us to get through a very difficult time.

We would especially like to thank those people who have come forward as foster carers in this time of crisis. You have enabled all the returned/returning dogs to remain in a home situation rather than forcing them to come back into a kennel environment after having experienced the comforts of home.

Recently Homed Greyhounds:

Ginny, Zoe, Crash, Rita and Poppy have found homes in November and December.

Reserved Greyhounds:

Molly and Farrah are reserved.

Perhaps they’ll soon be like Lady (we knew her as Bess) is in this photograph?

Are we just a little bit spoiled Lady?

New arrivals:

In kennels Maddie, Robbie, Josie and Blitzen are our most recent arrivals. In foster homes Tilly, Georgie and Jonnie are the most recent ones to be placed. Details of all the greyhounds we have available can be found in our Greyhounds Needing Homes Gallery.

Homes for the boys desperately needed:

If you are interested in adopting a greyhound please view our Boy or Girl page after which we hope you’ll consider one of our many boys alongside our just as lovely girls. We really need homes for boy greyhounds as we only have boys left waiting for places. Thankfully we are unusual in greyhound homing in that most of our kennels are single kennels and we can and always have taken more boys in for homing than girls.

Please help us to help some of those many boys still in need of places by adopting a boy wherever possible so a boy space can be freed up.

Don’t let Lungworm kill your dog!

Please be aware of Lungworm, it’s a killer that many of you won’t necessarily have heard of. It is spreading fast in the UK and many dogs have already died from it. Don’t panic however as Lungworm is very easy to prevent and equally if diagnosed early it can be treated very successfully too. Late diagnosis of Lungworm does not always have a happy ending however.

The following link will take you to a Lungworm Information site. For preventative treatment of lungworm you will need to contact your vet. Treatment/prevention of  Lungworm is by prescription medication only.

Updated greyhound Descriptions:

Maddie, Robbie, Willie, Sonny, Georgie, Jonnie and Blitzen have updated descriptions available in our Greyhounds Needing Homes Gallery.

Dan is still looking for adoption folks – how can anyone resist this boy?

Thank You:

Thank you to everyone who has donated goodies for both dogs and staff recently. Obviously you intend for both dog and handler to fatten up and waddle sooner rather than later! Seriously mind, we are very grateful for all the gifts recieved, it is truly lovely to know how generous our supporters are.

Holiday Season Homing Dates:

Please note that in the best interest of our greyhounds and to prevent the “dog for Christmas” scenario Greyhound Lifeline will not allow any greyhound adoptions to families with children in residence from now until Monday December 31st. Normal homing will re-commence from New Years Day.

Christmas spirit greyhound

Christmas and New Year are particularly busy and stressful times for many families and it is therefore an especially poor time for most to bring a new dog into the home. In the case of homes where children are not resident we will view each case on it’s own merits with the best interest of the dog as the only criteria for a decision to be made. In exceptional circumstances we may, possibly therefore allow an adoption to proceed before December 31st.

Please rest assured that we still welcome viewings and reservations as normal throughout the holiday period with a view to adoption dates being set for 1st January 2013 or shortly there after. Home checks and adoption enquiries will also continue as normal.

Christmas and New Year Kennel Opening Hours:

Our Christmas and New Year opening hours will be the same as for every other day of the year that is from11am until 1pm daily.

Volunteer dog walkers (adults) are welcome every day – please however try to arrive at 11am for walking since late arrivals may find that there are no dogs left to exercise!

Please also note that due to a change in the terms and conditions of our insurance we cannot accept any volunteers or visitors under the age of 16 years without a parent or guardian supervising them at all times. Children aged 16 and 17 years old may be accepted on site unaccompanied by prior agreement only and once a signed parental consent form has been received by us.

Christmas Appeal:

Are you able to buy a small extra present this Christmas? If you are then our kennel residents would love to receive some more dog treats. They get through them at an amazing rate! All dog treats are most welcome (although preferably not dog chocs mind  as many hounds won’t eat them and they are fiddly to handle for our frozen fingered staff too).

This appeal is going well, thank you to everyone who has so far donated, the hounds now have a good starting pile of threats that ought to see them through to the New Year. More donations very welcome however as the dogs do like their treats.
