New Beginnings For Greyhound Lifeline.

As you are all probably aware we must soon leave our current kennel site because the land owner is selling the farm.

Knowing this loss of the kennels is coming, we have been “homing down” for some time.  This is to reduce the number and urgency of greyhounds needing places at other Retired Greyhound Trust centres when that time comes.

We (that is Marie and Lucy whose current status within this branch of the Trust is that of joint-lead volunteers) have since made the decision to leave the Retired Greyhound Trust.

We are not however giving up the homing of greyhounds. We will continue running Greyhound Lifeline, but Greyhound Lifeline will become an independent homing group. On (or possibly before 20th February, if all RGT dogs have secured places elsewhere) Greyhound Lifeline will no longer have claim to charity status. We will from the date of separation no longer be associated with, or be any part of the Retired Greyhound Trust.

We understand work remains underway at the Retired Greyhound Trust to source a site for the replacement RGT Surrey and Hampshire Branch.

The newly independent Greyhound Lifeline, once separation has been finalised, will too be seeking a new site, in order to set up our own homing centre from. We will keep you updated on our progress in due course.

We have had as a branch of the Trust a hugely dedicated and hardworking team of volunteers and we hope to retain that team. We appreciate however that each volunteer is an individual and each individual has to make up their own mind about which group they choose to continue supporting.

The RGT have already written to the branch’s registered volunteers, so some of you reading this may already know part of this news.

Greyhound Lifeline will go through a time of uncertainty and challenge undoubtedly, but we have already been assured by some of our supporters.  Please bear with us during this transition phase. We will keep you all informed of progress online and most importantly we will let you know when the Trust’s remaining greyhounds have secured homing spaces at other locations. We will very much miss the RGT dogs that are currently in our care but we wish them success at finding an adoptive home through RGT homing branches.

Updates:

Thank you to all of our supporters and volunteers for all your hard work, we are very lucky to have so many talented people.  We have people who are kennel hands, fundraisers, home checkers, fosterers, DIY folk, socialisation with other breeds/training, walkers, coat makers, coat/bedding washers, take dogs to the vets – local and further afield (specialist vets) and people who donate saleable items.  We are very fortunate to have a wide range of volunteers, you all make Greyhound Lifeline so successful.  Thank you and we hope to help even more greyhounds in 2017.

In 2016 we homed 45 greyhounds, a successful year for those greyhounds.

During 2016 we had some special case greyhounds that found their forever homes.  We had Cheetah and Izzy both who needed specialised veterinary care to correct their medical issues.  Winston had waited for such a long time for his forever home, he had to watch his pal Harry find his new home but the waiting was worth it as he now has a lovely home up in Scotland, where he has adjusted very well and loves his new friend Emma.

We are very pleased for our Katie, a few months ago she was diagnosed with a heart condition.  Katie has been in a foster home now for several months and loves it!  We are very happy that she has now found her forever home where she can enjoy being with her own family and her new friend Rocky.
