Remedial Work has Begun at the Kennels

After a challenging couple of weeks with comparatively few greyhounds actually in residence at our kennels due to the recent bad weather having caused us flooding issues, we are very pleased to let you know that with effect from Monday 20th January we will welcome back Robbie, Piper, Wallace, Queenie and Champ. These 5 dogs are the ones that were moved rather suddenly to emergency kennelling elsewhere.

As one supporter called it we are effectively welcoming back our refugees. The 5 “refugees” have been visited by us during their stay away and all were happy and well. There is nothing however like having your charges directly in your care, so for this reason we have taken up some additional foster home offers to make room for the above 5 greyhounds to come back to us whilst having dry kennels to sleep in.

Robbie greyhound white and black

Robbie who we are looking forward to welcoming bak form his emergency “holiday” kennels on 20/1/14.

Our ground work improvements have been beautifully done and we are very grateful for the hard work of Stuart Harman and his assistant for their quality workmanship and plain hard work in difficult working conditions. Stuart’s company, Paving Solutions, based in Fleet, Hampshire can be contacted on 01252 626751, 07766080691 or by email at [email protected]. Stuart came recommended to us as we are just as happy to recommend his work to others. A very charitable man, who did us an extremely good deal, but not at the expense of good workmanship. Thank you Stuart!

We are still trying however to get the roof replacement underway and hope that before long it can finally be started. It does need a full, professional re-felting rather than just a patch up unfortunately, but we are none the less very grateful for the offers of labour and equipment to make it good which we have received.

Volunteer Vacancy:

We need to recruit another team member to join our other volunteers as a kennel assistant. We are looking for someone aged 18 years plus for one day a week to start from 8am (8.30am at the latest) and to work until around 1pm. You must be able to work those hours on a regular day, that day being either a Tuesday, a Wednesday or a Thursday. Own transport is essential.

Could it be your photo appearing on our site?

The job involves cleaning out kennels, feeding and exercising the greyhounds as routine. When time permits it may also involve bed changing, grooming and teeth cleaning etc.

We need someone with plenty of common sense, who is able to work alone (once trained). Working alone is unlikely, but there may be unexpected staff sickness or emergency vet trips on occasion which cannot be covered another way.

You’ll need to be honest, reliable and dedicated. It can be plain hard work at times so a reasonable level of physical fitness is required as some heavy lifting may be required.

You will need to be prepared to work outdoors in heat, cold, wind, rain, ice and snow. Our greyhounds need caring for 365 days a year and we don’t stop just because the weather doesn’t look nice.

Immediate start (for training  purposes) welcome, but we are looking for someone able to start properly during the first week of February.

If you are interested in this unpaid vacancy please contact Marie on 07828 138378 or email us at [email protected]. A no obligation taster session/interview will be required.

Thank You Foster Carers:

We would like to thank the following people for their fantastic fostering help and the other generous people too who offered help but have not been called upon. In most cases these foster homes are short term, emergency situation ones, but none the less it has given home life experience and a dry bed with love and affection to the lucky canine recipients.

Winston black male

Winston enjoying his time in a foster home.

Thank you to all our current foster carers, namely: Mo, Lucy, Saara & Ray, Alison & Paul F, Paul & Jane G, Cathy & Nigel, Marion, Jane W and to Helen & John as well who helped with fostering until their own dog became too poorly to cope with another around.

We Attracted Media Attention:

Our problems with flooding made headlines in the local media and you can read the story by visiting Get Hampshire. We were also lucky enough to be asked to appear on a live interview for BBC Radio Surrey and that interview with Marie was aired last Wednesday.

New arrivals:

Roger, Lance, Nelson, Nimrod, Eliza and Banksy are our most recent arrivals. Their details along with photographs are now on site along with information about all our other available dogs. To find available dogs please visit our Greyhounds For Adoption Gallery.

Homed Greyhounds:

Ryder, Lila, Curly, Sonny and Sparky have all found adoptive homes during December.

Reserved Greyhounds:

Lance (AKA Lurch) is reserved.

Greyhounds in foster care:

Bobby (3 legs), Niki, Jet and Banksy are in long term foster care. Currently Bobby (4 legs), Winston, Lance (AKA Lurch), Roger, Tipsy and Nelson are in short term emergency foster care. If one of our foster dogs interests you as a potential new family member then you simply need to call us and we’ll arrange a mutually convenient date and time for you to meet him/her.

New On Site:

Penny has written a new Greyhound Blog for you. We hope you enjoy reading it.

Postage Stamp Appeal:

Many of you may already know that the Retired Greyhound Trust collect used postage stamps to raise funds for the greyhounds in their care. For some of you collecting the occasional stamp here and there and finally getting around to posting a collection off may be a bit of a nuisance.

Thanks to the inspiration of Penny and Adrian (who have started the branch collection very nicely) we are now collecting as a kennel too. In due course we’ll arrange for a bulk lot of stamps to reach the RGT and save you the postage cost of sending them yourselves. From as little as one stamp, please bring them in whenever you visit us. We have a collection bag in the kennel kitchen for you to use. All stamps are welcome, but most especially the ones from abroad. Thank you everyone for supporting greyhound welfare Nationwide.

Foster Home Appeal:

We need more foster homes. Ideally we are looking for foster homes within easy traveling distance of Fleet, Wokingham, Alton or Southampton as we have trusted volunteer team members in those areas who would be able to assist with viewings if a trip to the kennels was not possible.

Jet in his foster home
Jet is in foster care and now the poor boy has the dubious title of being our current longest stay greyhound. Jet is fun and full of fun and character would you consider giving him a permanent adoptive home?

We prefer foster carers who have some experience of dog ownership and training. Homes without cats and young children are especially sought because homes with young children and/or cats or inexperience dog handlers severely restrict our options of the greyhounds we could place with you.

Niki is in foster care and she’s still looking for her adoptive home.

If greyhound fostering is of interest to you, then please visit our fostering information page to see if it could be the route for you.

Lungworm can kill!

Please be aware of Lungworm, it’s a killer that many of you won’t necessarily have heard of. It is spreading fast in the UK and many dogs have already died from it. Don’t panic however as Lungworm is very easy to prevent and equally if diagnosed early it can be treated very successfully too. Late diagnosis of Lungworm does not always have a happy ending however.

The following link will take you to a Lungworm Information site. For preventative treatment of lungworm you will need to contact your vet. Treatment/prevention of  Lungworm is by prescription medication only.
