Updates for August

BIG WALK UPDATES:

Due to the current heat wave and the New Forest fires we have taken the decision to postpone our BIG WALK for 2026 until Spring 2027.  The new date will be Saturday 10th April.

This decision has been difficult to make but the safety of our walkers, volunteers and greyhounds WILL always come first.

The walkers have not been able to take part in many longer training walks, due to the heat, that we have been experiencing, it has made it impossible to train, without putting them at risk of dehydration and heat stroke.

The walkers will continue to train once the temperatures are a little cooler.  The donations collected so far will be stored until next year when we re-open the GoFundMe page.

We would like to thank all our volunteers and supporters for being so understanding of the current situation.  We are all looking forward to Spring next year, when the event can take place safely.

HIGH TEMPERATURES:

With these extreme temperatures, it has been very difficult to enrich our greyhounds and keep them cool.  Most of our greyhounds love water so our plunge pool has been well used each day, along with our garden, raised, greyhound beds and the canopy that covers most of their outside area.

We have managed on most days to take them out for a walk very early in the morning and they have spent the rest of the day, chilling out on their cool beds, under fans and on special days eating doggie ice cream!

On some of the cooler mornings & evenings we have been able to take our greyhounds down to the beach, which is always a firm favourite!

How have you been managing to keep your pets cool?

We are looking forward to some cooler days when we can start taking the greyhounds back out again, investigating new places and for them to learn new skills too.

Kennel News:

Last week we had three new additions at the kennels.

Manny, Min and Elrond all three are 3 years old and are certainly all good looking too!

Beautiful Min

If you are interested in Min, Manny or Elrond please get in contact, they certainly will be snapped up soon!

Reserved greyhounds:

Marley and Iris.

Homed greyhounds:

Harry and Tabor.

Dog Food Donations:

If anyone is able to purchase us some Butchers Dog Tinned Meat our kennel greyhounds would be very thankful.  We would prefer the tripe mix or the meaty loaf, we ask that you do NOT purchase anything in gravy as it upsets our dog’s tummies.  Thank You.

APPEAL FOR KENNEL DOG WALKERS:

We are looking to extend our walking team, these volunteers walk our kennel dogs each day.

Criteria for walkers:

  • Volunteers must live near to Southampton.
  • We need people who can help us either early morning, starting time around 7.30am or mid afternoon to exercise our kennel dogs.
  • We are looking for walkers who can walk Monday-Friday.
  • Volunteers need to have their own transport.
  • Volunteers will be joining a group of walkers, we need people who can work well within a team.

Full training will be given to all successful volunteers.

If you are interested in applying please email us on [email protected], please tell us about yourself and your experience around greyhounds/dogs.
