Round Up of January 2021

News from the kennels:

What a fantastic start to the year!

We are working hard with our trainers to ensure the dogs waiting to be rehomed, can be transfered into our care swiftly once their racing days are over.

This year so far 14 dogs have come into our care, we have continued to assess our dogs carefully to match them to the right families as best as we can, from the information given and what we have found out from the many converstaions we have with each one.

Magic enjoying a good game with his human friend.

We are very grateful to all our volunteers and the public for showing your very kind support towards us through donations of any kind, washing off coats, our kennel hands who continue to work their shifts each week to ensure all dogs are well cared for.

Last weekend we only had three dogs in our care and the snow came down very fast!  The decision was to bring them out of kennels so nobody was at risk of working alone at the kennels in those hard conditions, if they could get from their house to the kennels, which most couldn’t.  We can now say all dogs are back at our centre again and are being well looked after.

Some sad news:

We are very sad to say that Storm was returned into our care, he had been rehomed twice and both times bounced back through no fault of his own.

Please seriously think about what rehoming a greyhound/dog entails before actually rehoming one.  Storm is very fortunate in having a very bouncy character and it doesn’t appear to have unsettled him too much.  When he was returned into our care, after each homing, he was fortunate enought to be able to go back into the foster home he knew very well and settled back very quickly.

Storm has now found his perfect home which we are all very pleased about.

For all our dogs during this pandemic we are carrying out a significant amount of checks on any potential adopter, just like we always do, however we need you to play your part and actually seriously THINK before you adopt.

Please ask yourself:

Can we afford to keep the greyhound? (Vet bills, cost of equipment, monthly food allowance, parasite control, insurance etc)

If you go on holiday who is going to look after the dog?

If you have to return to work after the current lockdown, who is going to come into the house, to see to the dogs needs so they are only left 5 hours max?

Can you be sure you are going to continue to work from home after lockdown has finished?

What would happen if you were unwell?

Are you prepared to housetrain the dog?

Are you willing to take the greyhound out for their walks each day, even in the rain or when you are busy?

Will you get up at night if they need the toilet or are unwell?

We hope the above questions are a good starting point, for people who are seriously thinking of adoption a greyhound.

If you have any questions about adopting please do get in contact, we will be very pleased to talk to you about it.
