Whatever the Weather…..

The past few days have been just a little bit tricky at the kennels. Rest assured that all our residents are safe and well, but unfortunately our kennel buildings have finally succumbed to the extreme weather.

It could be a lot worse, but we have developed a few leaky patches on the roof and some ground water seepage is creeping in as well. That combined with overloaded drainage and seemingly continual rain has challenged all our volunteer staff and our hardy, “all weather” dog walkers too. That said, no one has given up yet and people are rallying around to assist in whatever way they can.

Don’t forget that we stock a range of coats, including rain macs like this one for your greyhounds. We are open daily from 11am until 1pm for walking, food or coat sales etc.

As of this evening there are just 9 greyhounds left in the kennels and they are obviously in the kennels that are remaining fully dry. The other 8 residents have been moved out and into a combination of foster places locally and kennels in Surrey until we are able to take them all back without risk of them having to stay in wet kennels.

A post appeared on our Facebook page on Saturday explaining the flooding situation and we have since been overwhelmed by the generosity and goodwill of so many people. Absolute worst case scenario and only if the weather gets worse and our residents look like they need moving we amazingly have enough emergency foster homes waiting to take every resident to safety. Wow, that is just such good news!

Greyhound in water

It’s not this bad where we are and for that we are truly thankful! This is a happy and adopted greyhound cooling off during playtime in the summer.

We’ve also had several kind offers of equipment and labour to patch up the roof. What a wonderful bunch of people you all are, especially as so many of you are struggling with flood worries and travel problems yourselves.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has rallied and offered both physical help and moral support. We will not be defeated. Whatever the weather throws at us, we will endure and give our dogs the best care we can until they find an adoptive home of their own.

A volunteer today wrote the following which seems to sum up what all our volunteers are feeling: “The hounds mean a lot to all of us and we will do anything we can to help. Nobody wants to see these wonderful dogs cold and wet so we will all muck in with whatever needs doing.”

New arrivals:

Roger, Lance, Nelson, Nimrod, Eliza and Banksy are our most recent arrivals. Their details along with photographs are now on site along with information about all our other available dogs. To find available dogs please visit our Greyhounds For Adoption Gallery.

Eliza black female
New girl Eliza is an interesting combination of timidness combined with a keen chase instinct. She’d be best with a companion canine and an experienced owner.

Homed Greyhounds:

Ryder, Lila, Curly, Sonny and Sparky have all found adoptive homes during December.

Greyhounds in foster care:

Bobby (3 legs), Niki, Jet and Banksy are in long term foster care. Currently Bobby (4 legs), Winston and Lance are in short term emergency foster care. If one of our foster dogs interests you as a potential new family member then you simply need to call us and we’ll arrange a mutually convenient date and time for you to meet him/her. Robbie, Queenie, Wallace, Piper and Champ are in emergency kennels in Surrey. We will do our best to accommodate any viewing for them, if required, but logistics may mean waiting until we can welcome those 5 back into our own kennels once our flooding problem is over.

Bobby black male (3 legs)
Bobby (3 legs) still needs a home of his own.

New On Site:

Penny has written a new Greyhound Blog for you. We hope you enjoy reading it.

Foster Home Appeal:

We need more foster homes. Ideally we are looking for foster homes within easy traveling distance of Fleet, Wokingham, Alton or Southampton as we have trusted volunteer team members in those areas who would be able to assist with viewings if a trip to the kennels was not possible.

Jet in his foster home
Jet is in foster care and now the poor boy has the dubious title of being our current longest stay greyhound. The boy is fun and full of character would you consider giving him a permanent adoptive? home

We prefer foster carers who have some experience of dog ownership and training. Homes without cats and young children are especially sought because homes with young children and/or cats or inexperience dog handlers severely restrict our options of the greyhounds we could place with you.

Niki is in foster care and she’s still looking for her adoptive home.

If greyhound fostering is of interest to you, then please visit our fostering information page to see if it could be the route for you.

Lungworm can kill!

Please be aware of Lungworm, it’s a killer that many of you won’t necessarily have heard of. It is spreading fast in the UK and many dogs have already died from it. Don’t panic however as Lungworm is very easy to prevent and equally if diagnosed early it can be treated very successfully too. Late diagnosis of Lungworm does not always have a happy ending however.

The following link will take you to a Lungworm Information site. For preventative treatment of lungworm you will need to contact your vet. Treatment/prevention of  Lungworm is by prescription medication only.
