Open Day is Not Far Away!

Our Kennel Open Day is not far away now! Please make a note in your diaries and come along to join the fun on Sunday 8th June from 11am until 2pm.

We are based just outside of Fleet, Hampshire, but out of respect for our landlady’s wishes we are unable to publish our kennel address on the internet. If you would like to join us, please email in and we’ll happily let you know where we are and how to get there.

Event from 2011 Open Day

Kennel Open Day Bonio and Spoon Race Chaos.

Entry to our Open Day, as ever is free of charge. Having said that we would really appreciate a donation for the kennel greyhounds of canned fish (in spring water, oil or tomato sauce) or some canned dog food. No fish in brine please, since salt is toxic to dogs. Not obligatory, but very much appreciated if you could supply a can or two for the greyhounds.

Our fish collection from last year’s Open Day is just about coming to an end now. Amazing generosity from last years visitors! If we are lucky again this year then your generosity will keep our residents in sardines, pilchards and tuna treats etc for another year to come!

Homed Greyhounds:

Open Day 2014:

Our 2014 Open day has been set for Sunday 8th June, 11am until 2pm. We hope that you’ll all come along and join the fun to help us raise funds for the greyhounds in our care. Our annual Open Day is our biggest single fundraising event of the year.

So far we have the following confirmed attractions:

Fun races (like Greyhound Relay and Bonio and Spoon), we will have Chris and Marina from K9 Matters in attendance to help with any behaviour queries you may have. We will have Rachel a vet nurse at Ark Veterinary Practice offering canine nail clipping (for a small donation) and general health/dental advice.

There will be refreshments, a plant stall offering young plants right through to fully flowering hanging basket arrangements, a raffle, tombola, bric a brac, home made cakes/jams/pickles etc. Other attractions include our greyhound merchandise stall and alongside that the talented Amy will be offering her hand made greyhound tassels and greyhound ear rings (for people naturally).

We’ll have our local dog warden in attendance offering free microchipping and you can also ask her any legal question about dog ownership that you may have. We have our very own Viv who will be playing some live folk music on her flute while you browse. Quite possibly there will be a whole lot more yet too. We are still planning!

Parking will be on site, courtesy of our landlady and one of her fields.

Please note that we have no facilities to accept credit or debit cards. Any payments for goods or donations on the day will need to be done by either cash or cheque.

Greyhounds in Foster Care:

Jet, Roger, Rosie and Tipsy are in foster care. If one of our foster dogs interests you as a potential new family member then you simply need to call us and we’ll arrange a mutually convenient date and time for you to meet him/her.

Tipsy is such a good girl in her foster home. Won’t someone ask after her with a view to giving her an adoptive home? She’s waiting such a long time that it must be her turn next surely?

Used Postage Stamp and Ink Cartridge Appeal:

Many of you may already know that the Retired Greyhound Trust collect used postage stamps to raise funds for the greyhounds in their care. For some of you collecting the occasional stamp here and there and finally getting around to posting a collection off may be a bit of a nuisance.

Foster Home Appeal:

We need more foster homes. Ideally we are looking for foster homes within easy traveling distance of Fleet, Wokingham, Alton or Southampton as we have trusted volunteer team members in those areas who would be able to assist with viewings if a trip to the kennels was not possible.

We prefer foster carers who have some experience of dog ownership and training. Homes without cats and young children are especially sought because homes with young children and/or cats or inexperience dog handlers severely restrict our options of the greyhounds we could place with you.

If greyhound fostering is of interest to you, then please visit our fostering information page to see if it could be the route for you.

Lungworm can kill!

Please be aware of Lungworm, it’s a killer that many of you won’t necessarily have heard of. It is spreading fast in the UK and many dogs have already died from it. Don’t panic however as Lungworm is very easy to prevent and equally if diagnosed early it can be treated very successfully too. Late diagnosis of Lungworm does not always have a happy ending however.

The following link will take you to a Lungworm Information site. For preventative treatment of lungworm you will need to contact your vet. Treatment/prevention of Lungworm is by prescription medication only.
